Senate holds hearing on commercial space capabilities

The Senate committee with NASA oversight has begun a hearing on "Assessing Commercial Space Capabilities."

NASA is proposing to turn over the transportation of crews to low Earth orbit to commercial launch companies instead of developing and operating its own rocket fleet.

President Obama's proposed fiscal year 2011 budget would cancel NASA's Constellation moon program and offer $6 billion over five years to help commercial companies develop rockets and spacecraft as soon as 2016.
