Obama To Meet NASA Chief in Oval Office Wednesday

President Obama will meet Wednesday with NASA Administrator Charles Bolden to discuss the findings of the White House panel that reviewed the agency's plans for the post-shuttle future of the nation's human space flight program.

A daily White House press schedule shows Obama and Bolden, a former astronaut and close friend of U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fl., will meet at 3:05 p.m. in the Oval Office.

"The President will also meet with NASA Administrator Charles Bolden in the Oval Office to discuss the Administrator's work at NASA and they will also discuss the Augustine Committee's analysis," the release says.

Led by former Lockheed Martin chairman Norman Augustine, the committee spent the summer reviewing NASA plans for Project Constellation, the current program aimed at returning astronauts to the moon by 2020. The committee developed eight options, six of which would cancel NASA's Ares I rocket in favor of developing commercial crew transportation systems.

Here's the president's schedule:

It will be the end of US Manned Spaceflight before the end of the day...... Brevard county will die also..... that's the "change" you fools voted for.

the Augustine Commission's Report should be entirely thrown in the trash can and the same should be done with the ESAS plan that has generated monsters like the Ares-1 that is already DEAD before it's really born

could Obama say something like "Yes, We Can... go to Mars!" in the press conference after meeting the NASA administrator?

Fla today is censoring comments from those that either appose Barack Hussien Obama or express views that they dont like.

Hopefully the result of this meeting is that NASA will be able to finally move past the Ares I debacle and do something meaningful and productive in space, like the Flexible Path option offered by the Augustine Committee. The notion that it's in NASA's best interest to spend $35 billion to develop the medium-lift Ares I launcher and capsule and send it to low-Earth orbit at a cost of nearly $1 billion/launch is absolutely absurd.

Let all the hater being there sound-off. Blah Blah blah the president wants to scrap/destroy the space program blah blah... (but I thought government doesn't create jobs)..the president takes away money from NASA -- even though NASA has not really been productive (but I thought to fix a problem "don't throw money at it." like funding for failing schools get rid of it more to successful schools right)...blah blah blah. Talk to a NASA worker who isn't a dinosaur and they will tell you Obama is helping NASA cause his plan is getting rid of the old and worn and getting in with the new. The old dont want to go or try new things.

This will be an interesting meeting...

I think they planned to gut NASA, outsource LEO, go the aimless
and useless "Flexible" route and bring the Communist Chinese into the fold thru the ISS.

Now that Congress has thrown a monkey wrench into that by increasing HSF funding by almost $4 Billion and prohibiting ANY
changes to the Program of Record without their approval, it would seem "O" and Bolden have been backed into a corner.

Still, it wouldn't surprise me at all if those two come out with their own original plan and try and call Congress' bluff.

Risky if "O" wants Health Care passed.

Then again they may just embrace what Congress wants to do and,
as is usual with "O", take all the credit for the hard work of others.

Wish I was a fly on the wall at that meeting. :)

And the future of HSF is, "Waffle Waffle Waffle" same as 2009 with a 10% funding cut.

It depends on the vision that can be given to the taxpayers of the end of US Manned Spaceflight before the end of the day.Paint a picture of Earth without the option of using man in space to keep us safe! Politics is useless when the people demand their freedoms!Freedom from Fear, from Want, of Assembly,of the Press(Speech),of Religion. What options we give other nations if we do not exercise ours?

Or, perhaps Obama could live up to his word and SAVE thousands of jobs. What are the chances of a politician actually doing what he says?

My guess, somewhere between Slim and None.

There is already a funding bill for Ares on his desk. Bolden supports the turn towards Ares and until you pseudo-geniuses have a plan that is extensive and promising as Ares, I suggest you eat crow and support the option that is already far ahead in development ! A program that needs tweaking is much better than a pipe dream.

NASA has no direction. "The moon" come on been there nothing worth seeing. Space weapons and satelites should be the focus. No need for men in Space now. Quit the oh China will beat us in Space BS. Let them waste money on it. We did for 50 years and they have all the manufactureing. We should trade them the Shuttle for factories.

Obama has shown little interest in any program that is not based within our domestic terra firma. Afghanistan, Iraq, and NASA are not within his sphere if interest. They are foreign to the land based Chicago president.

You are so right-on! We are also in a lose lose situation with Afghanistan, killing one or two tribal leaders here and there at a cost of over a million dollars a shot!NASA is saturated with dead weight do nothing people riding the bubble right to the very end, which should be arriving pretty quickly much to their dislike. There are also just as many GOOD NASA folks who will be caught up in the results of BAD BAD management of our nations space program for many years.

We have become a nation of whiners. We have a bad space program boo hoo hoo...we can't win any war, boo hoo hoo, my iPod won't work waaaahhhh. Please just shut up, all of you. Many of our parents survived depression and world war. They grew up proud of the abilities of our nation and scoffed at the idea of failure. Now we have several generations of spoiled brats who cave every time someone calls them a name or asks them to do one more pushup. Put your teddy bears away, let go of mommy's apron, and start believing that things of greatness are accomplished by people with a vision, not big bloated government agencies !

By the way Herr Lieberman who is against the Public Option and extending Medicare is always in favor of giving more money to Isreal where Israel uses part of the Billions we give them to provide FREE HEALTH CARE to Israeli Citizens plus Billions left over to give back to US Defense Contractors.

This is a GIANT SCAM OF IMMENSE PROPORTIONS. This SCAM is worse than GLOBAL WARMING!

Aid To Israel = Perpetual War in the Middle East!

Stop the Aid and Stop The War plus save Billions that the US Tax Payer is borrowing from China just to give it away when we can use it for Health Care for US Citizens.

Big Business uses the Govt to Farm the US Tax Payers - that is the truth!

Someone posted: "start believing that things of greatness are accomplished by people with a vision, not big bloated government agencies"
Who do you think produced so much for the space programs, medical fields, and regular consumer products across this entire planet? BIG government agencies... Not only ours, China's and Russia's too... Wow, some people????

NASA engineers and technicians along with defense contractors all over the world provide a lot more then big paychecks for employees (which are deserved), and cannon fodder for idiots, so please do some actual research before spitting off from your overly swollen head!
America NEEDS the space program; the byproducts of a successful space program are more than enough reason to provide adequate funds for our flailing space program.
Come Obama, give up some money...

To all:

Florida Today does not censor comments based on political leanings or whatnot. We reject posts that contain language we could not print in a family newspaper as well as personal attacks on people. Think about it: If we censored comments, would we post comments that accuse us of censoring comments?

After the Ares 1-X debacle and the expected stellar R&D costs and very long development time of the Ares-1, there are some rumors that talk about a possible return to the original Ares-1 design (published in the ESAS plan in 2005) with a standard SRB as 1st stage and a 2nd stage based on a (now unexisting) "air started SSME".
--
But, as explained in the latest update of my "Why the Ares-1 is already DEAD" article, also the old designed (SRB4 + SSME based) Ares-1 CAN'T FLY with a so HEAVY Orion.

Interesting… I might try some of this on my blog, too. It’s quite interesting how you sometimes stop being innovative and just go for an accepted solution without actually trying to improve it… you make a couple of good points..
