Live at Cape: Weather worsens for Delta IV

A storm has produced a lightning strike within 10 nautical miles of Launch Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and lightning prediction systems around the pad are in a "red" status.

As a result, a planned 6:14 p.m. launch of Delta IV rocket carrying a weather satellite cannot proceed unless conditions clear.

NASA said a plane would be dispatched to study the cloud cell more closely.

The launch has a one-hour window that lasts until 7:14 p.m. If the launch scrubbed because of weather, it would be reset for the same time Saturday.

The rocket is fueled and managers will soon begin testing its engines' ability to steer properly, on both the core booster and upper stage.

No technical problems are being monitored.
