NASA Work Force Update To Congress

NASA aims to deliver an update to Congress today on its work force transition plan for the scheduled 2010 retirement of its three-orbiter shuttle fleet, and it appears there will be little change in the forecast for Kennedy Space Center.

An initial transition plan unveiled earlier this year indicated that in a worst case, up to 6,400 jobs could be lost at KSC as the shuttle program winds down. It's more likely that the number of lost jobs will be much smaller than that -- some where around 3,500 to 4,000.

The update will be delivered to Congress at 3 p.m. today, and we'll post the information as soon as it is available. NASA is required by congressional legislation to provide an update every six months. The first to be released after a new administration takes office in the White House will come next spring.
