Quality inspectors with NASA and Lockheed Martin examine a red-line drawing of foam placement on space shuttle Atlantis's external tank (in front of them) to verify the foam insulation that was reapplied. The foam covers the feed-through engine cut-off, or ECO, sensor connector. The foam was removed to enable engineers to remove and replace the ECO sensor connector on the tank.
Work to reinstall the feed-through connector and cover it with foam was finished today, NASA spokesman George Diller said.
Only curing the foam remains. Technicians are removing the protective workspace over the connector area on the lower part of the external tank.
Meanwhile, diagnostic tests continue to confirm the hypothesis that intermittent signals from the low-fuel sensors in the external tank were caused by the connector. Outside leads have been soldered to maintain connectivity.
Atlantis is scheduled to launch Feb. 7 on a mission to the International Space Station.
