Live at KSC: Sensor checks begin

Inspection and troubleshooting crews arrived at the launch pad and began work to determine why three of four low-fuel sensors failed during today's tanking test.

The troubleshooting is expected to take several hours, said NASA commentator George Diller. The team will read back initial voltages and begin troubleshooting procedures.

A blown fuse delayed the crews' arrival by about a half hour.

Only sensor No. 4 worked perfectly today, though it malfunctioned in earlier tests. Sensor No. 1 failed completely, while sensors No. 2 and 3 failed intermittently.

"Sensors No. 1, 2 and 3 will be the primary focus of troubleshooting," said Diller.

The tank is loaded with 500,000 gallons of cryogenic fuel.

"Hopefully, once we get into draining the tank, we'll have some insight into whatever has been occurring," Diller said.

Shuttle program manager Wayne Hale will explain the test during a news conference no earlier than 4:30 p.m. EST.
