A United Launch Alliance Delta 2 rocket blasted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, hauling a military navigation satellite toward orbit.The 12-story Delta leapt off its seaside launch pad just after 3 p.m. and then rocketed through wispy white clouds in an otherwise crisp blue sky.
Click to enlarge these two photos taken from the roof of the Florida Today blockhouse at the Launch Complex 39 Press Site at Kennedy Space Center. The Delta 2 took off from Launch Complex 17A at CCAFS, which is one of the southernmost pads on missile row.
The launch was the 13th this year for ULA, a joint venture partnership that marries the Lockheed Martin Atlas and Boeing Delta rocket families. The company employs 816 people at the military's primary East Coast launch base.
