Yacht intercepted in restricted KSC waters

A private yacht with two aboard was intercepted in restricted waters at Kennedy Space Center today after being chased down by agency security officers.

The unidentified mariners were onboard a 40-foot ship named Peregrine out of Naples. Despite signs that warned they were entering a restricted waterway, the boaters ran under a bridge that crosses the Banana River and connects the KSC Industrial Area with Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

Five KSC security officers boarded and searched the boat after it was intercepted in the channel leading up to the KSC Turn Basin. Security officers then called the Brevard County Sheriff's Office to make certain there were no arrest warrants outstanding for the boaters.

A federal trespassing citation was given to the boaters and they were escorted back to public waterways.

The security breach was rare but not unprecedented. Boats and yachts have been intercepted in restricted waters in years past and aircraft have strayed into restricted airspace around NASA's shuttle homeport.
