NASA is delaying launch of a pair of solar observatories at least another month to allow the second stage of a Delta 2 rocket to be removed from the launch vehicle and rechecked preflight.
The reason is concerns about whether a propellant tank in the second stage is structurally sound for flight after a similar tank in another Delta 2 was shown to be potentially unsafe.
The launch of the mission is now set for no earlier than Oct. 18 from Pad 17B at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The two STEREO spacecraft remain in a processing facility near the Cape.
