Helms to command Space Wing

Former astronaut and Brig. Gen. select Susan Helms is returning to the Space Coast-based 45th Space Wing as commander, the Department of Defense reports. She was at Patrick Air Force Base previously as vice commander and is now coming from a deputy director position at Randolph Air Force Base in Texas. The current Space Wing commander, Brig. Gen. Mark Owen, is heading to the Pentagon. His duties amount to a bit of a mouthful: "deputy director, Strategic Security, Deputy Chief of Staff, Air, Space and Information Operations, Plans and Requirements" at Air Force headquarters. The 45th Space Wing supports launch operations at Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
