Striking machinists: Contract talks to resume

Striking machinists and NASA's prime shuttle contractor apparently are set to return to the bargaining table, a move that would kick-start stalled contract negotiations after a standstill of nearly three months.

In a flash notice to its members, leaders with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 2061 said that labor relations officials with United Space Alliance have proposed a return to the bargaining table.

"We view this as a positive development, and a move in the right direction," the union said in a posting on its strike blog. "Please join us in our cautious optimism, but realize that it's going to take hard work to hammer out a contract this membership can be proud of, a fair and just contract that is good for the members, for United Space Alliance, and for NASA."

USA officials say the company is willing to reopen negotiations as long as there are no preconditions.

Stay tuned.

Looks like the "Flash" news item on the IAM web site about negotiations is gone (at least I could not find it and it was there yesterday). Help me if it is still there and post the link in this blog.

5:54 I based that on what was posted in an earlier blog.

    "Anonymous said...
"According to Yates, 445 Local 2061 members are on strike, while 103 members of the bargaining unit are working. In addition, the company has hired 116 contract workers, she said."

So basically, it only takes 219 hard working individuals, to do the work of 548 union workers?"

    445 + 103 = 548

    103/548 = .1879 or 19%

But I am no math genius.

USA didn't walk out of the negotiations, the IAM did. The same offer is as good as the day you morons walked out. USA did not request a return to negotiations. It will be interesting to see how the union spins this one.

USA are begging for us to return because the center won't function without us?- Nope that won't work

Our skills are irreplaceable?- Oops, apparently not.

We have NASA trembling in their shoes. That lawsuit is going to bring them to their knees.- Never sue the government, they have more time and money than the IAM (and better lawyers too)

We have really pissed USA and NASA off and better start grovelling to salvage what we can from this mess- May work, provided you can come up with a good pitch for the proletariat

    You choose

example: lay her off, she is only good for her sexy outfits that she wears everyday. I do the work!
or... lay him off, lazy good for nothing brother-in-law of the manager. I put out more work in one day than he does in a year.

you anti-union wimps have taken great delight on these blogs, trying to rip apart a striker's wife, accusing us of child abuse by not feeding our children (which could not be further from the truth because these 3 months have given us more quality family time than we have ever had in the past) and much name calling. But, I will have some satisfaction in knowing when lay off time comes around, that you will wish you had a union protecting your interests at work.

A dedicated shop steward was at a convention in Las Vegas and decided to check out the local brothels.

When he got to the first one, he asked the Madame," Is this a union house?" "No, I'm sorry it isn't." she replied.

"Well, if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?" the union man asked. "The house gets $80 and the girls get $20."

Mightily offended at such unfair dealings, the man stomped off down the street in search of a more equitable shop. His search continued a long time...

Finally he reached a brothel where the Madame said, "Why yes, this is a union house."

"And if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?" "The girls get $80 and the house gets $20."

"That's more like it!" the man said. He looked around the room and pointed to a stunningly attractive redhead. "I'd like her for the night."

"I'm sure you would, sir," said the Madame, gesturing to a fat sixty-year-old woman in the corner, "but Ethel here has seniority."

I just can't understand where so many union members' sense of entitlement comes from. As in the jobs belong to them, people are doing their work, etc. I work at a space center job too, and do my best every day. But I do not feel as if I am owed anything by my company. I continue to do an excellent job, so the company wants to keep me as an employee and offers decent pay and benefits. If I felt that what was offered was substandard I would look for work elsewhere, not try to coerce the company to pay me more. And no, I am not working any union tasks.

From what I have seen there is no reason for many of the striking union members to act so high and mighty, as their managers and engineers filling in are finding that a great deal of the regular PMs that many of the strikers stamped off could not possibly have been completed. I am sure that there are some striking workers with a lot of integrity that would never dream of this, but those of you who are hard workers you must realize that management is now well aware of many instances when work was stamped off by your co-workers as completed but was not done (wet stamped). It is pretty easy for them to tell when they work a document that is a biannual WAD and open the equipment up and can see easily that no one has been in there in years: lots of parts are missing, grease is petrified, etc.

Contrary to what is going around, there is no maintenance that is being bypassed. I have seen numerous mentions in the comments about how maintenance is not getting performed and NASA is standing by and allowing it and it simply isn't true. All of the maintenance is being performed, and that is how the work that hasn't been performed in years past is being found. Process surveillance is monitoring everything very closely. Broken items that have been waiting months to be repaired have been fixed and the backlog of PRs in many shops has disappeared. I am not saying everything has been perfect, there was a bit of a learning curve at the beginning for replacement workers, but they are up to speed now and their perfomance only improves by the day.

I am not trying to union bash, I just want the union members to know what is really going on. I don't really care one way or another how this all ends except I feel sorry for union members that have worked at KSC for decades who may be throwing it all away due to misinformation. Please be smart about this and do what you have to do whether it is to come back to work or to stay out and find employment elsewhere.

I really wish you no ill will, whether you believe it or not.

Awesome I heard getting into a managers slot is pretty easy when you know someone and I have a friend that is Assistant Store Manager from my understanding he gets paid a lot more than your directors and as always a company takes care of its own and does not do squat for the employees and I could not do that to another human being that puts pants on the same way i do.

  54. Anonymous8:35 PM

Quote: "So your are saying that USA is lying to NASA and taxpayers for haveing that many employees for this amount of time to do that little work??????"

No, I don't think anyone is saying that. In any organization there are tasks that could be completed in a more efficient manner, if the workers have a mind to. The work of those out on strike is being made up by the hiring of temporary replacement workers coupled with a lot of overtime hours being put in both by workers that have been temporarily reassigned to these areas and workers in the areas loaning them out in order to fill in the gaps they left behind.

    ReplyDelete

You have 4 days left to make the call to return. Fair warning. Most IAM read this. Decide who you trust the most. If you find out negotiations are not going to happen, that should tell you something. Think about the yelling at your last meeting about when talks would resume. And now, like magic, the union announces talks will resume. You have been lied to. Think about who you are trusting to tell you the truth. I know most have a disregard for their management, but you better think for yourself on this one.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Anonymous8:47 PM

IAM is negotiating with the grunts to keep them from crossing the line.

USA is going to tell you grunts to take it or leave it. Honestly the only grunts in your union that deserve the jobs are those grunts that did not walk out or those grunts that crossed the line. I hope the rest of you grunts either wise up and come back or go flip hamburgers. Of course that may take a little training for you grunts to understand how to use a spatula!

I am not sure what you are trying to say here. Obviously with several hundred fewer workers there would be an overtime requirement even if things are being done more efficiently. To say that the overtime should not be needed is to imply that those being replaced did not do anything of consequence. I never said that.

Here's something for everyone to do, learn this song . Its an old song by a band called the Strawbs. Learn it, sing it,

    Solidarity Brothers!

    Part Of The Union

    Now I'm a union man
    Amazed at what I am
    I say what I think
    That the company stinks
    Yes I'm a union man.

When we meet in the local hall
I'll be voting with them all
With a hell of a shout
    It's out brothers out
And the rise of the factory's fall.

Oh you don't get me I'm part of the union
You don't get me I'm part of the union
You don't get me I'm part of the union
Till the day I die, till the day I die.

As a union man I'm wise
To the lies of the company spies
    And I don't get fooled
    By the factory rules
'Cause I always read between the lines.

And I always get my way
If I strike for higher pay
    When I show my card
    To the Scotland Yard
    This what I say.

Oh you don't get me I'm part of the union
You don't get me I'm part of the union
You don't get me I'm part of the union
Till the day I die, till the day I die.

    Before the union did appear
My life was half as clear
    Now I've got the power
    To the working hour
And every other day of the year.

So though I'm a working man
I can ruin the government's plan
    Though I'm not too hard
    The sight of my card
Makes me some kind of superman.

Oh you don't get me I'm part of the union
You don't get me I'm part of the union
You don't get me I'm part of the union
Till the day I die, till the day I die.

I hardly consider myself an "egomaniac;" I am not one of the ones that feels I am owed something from the company that employs me other than the compensation and benefits that are offered. I really think it is a bit over the top to call me a "sorry individual" or a "tool." And I am certainly not one of the "engineers who just spew forth the same old paper."

What's going on here does not show integrity and character. Are things being said because no one knows who you are? "Character is doing the right thing when no one is looking." Plenty for Ronaldinho to grin about in Brazil win
    By Brian Homewood
RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept 10 (Reuters) - Ronaldinho produced one of his best performances in a Brazil shirt during Sunday's 4-2 win over the United States, setting up two goals and scoring the decisive one himself.
Often criticised for saving his best for club side Barcelona, Ronaldinho's characteristic grin has been conspicuous by its absence since Dunga took over as Brazil coach last year.
He was initially left on the bench and, along with Kaka, missed the Copa America in Venezuela altogether after saying he was too tired to play.
Brazil won the tournament without him and on returning to the side for last month's friendly against Algeria, he was once again relegated to the substitute's role.
In that match, he came on for the second half, scored the second goal in Brazil's 2-0 win and did enough to convince Dunga to give him his place back.
On Sunday in Chicago, Ronaldinho relished the free role given to him just behind the attack.
He began by producing an exquisite chipped pass over the U.S. rearguard which found striker Afonso, whose effort clipped the post.
After Carlos Bocanegra gave the U.S. a shock lead, another moment of brilliance contributed to Brazil's equaliser.
Following a quick Brazilian break down the right, Ronaldinho threaded the ball between three U.S. defenders to Kaka, whose shot was parried by Tim Howard but bounced off Oguchi Onyewu of the United States and into the net.
There was more to come after the break as he produced the corner from which Lucio headed Brazil in front and scored the third himself with a cheeky free kick which found a gap in the U.S. wall.
    DUNGA'S GAME
"I feel more and more adapted to Dunga's way of doing things," said Ronaldinho after the game.
Ronaldinho and Kaka now appear to be firmly back in the coach's plans after their much-criticised decision to sit out the Copa.
Midfielder Josue, who played a pivotal role in the Copa America, did not get onto the pitch at all on Sunday while Julio Baptista, another key man in Venezuela, appeared for the last 20 minutes.
Brazil move onto Boston where they play Mexico on Wednesday, their last match before facing Colombia in their opening match of the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign next month.
With his top players all based in Europe, Dunga admits his main worry is a shortage of time.
"We need to improve the understanding and teamwork, the problem is that we don't have time to train," said Dunga, who had one session with his players before Sunday's game.

You know I am right. You too have seen all the mistakes that are going on. Except you are too little of a man to admit it. I will admit it. NASA is too scared to let the public know what is really going on out there. It is time for your nap...don't get caught.

ok i have been lurking and have no skin in the game, but i would like to know if the union guys/gals can be fired after 90 days? I thought most labor contracts state 180 days.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Anonymous11:43 AM

A sanctioned strike can go indefinitely. The only way to get rid of the striking workers is to lock out the union. That means that ALL union represented workers have to be extricated from the job site. Scabs as well. And start from scratch. But this still does not fire the striking workers. They can still strike forever.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Anonymous12:07 PM

thanks for the info. i guess my question really is this: is there a point of no return when a striker can be permanently replaced? Does the fact that you are a union member protect you from being fired when you strike.

Once again, just asking, no need to flame me.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Anonymous12:31 PM

Depends how you see it. If the company wishes not to settle the strike then it goes on. If the striker wishes to stay on strike then he does. Legally there is no way a company can fire a striker who is on a sanctioned strike. There are reports of a strike in Pa. that has lasted 16 years.

I don't know about Florida's laws much, I mostly break em'. But your union knows the cutoff dates that the company has for firing strikers. In Michigan we were told the crucial dates by our union, your should tell you.If they say don't know, you have bigger problem than you know.I'm sure they do, ask steward. Good luck folks.

Both my brother and I chose not to participate in the strike. I have decid
ed not to listen to my brother anymore! I would like to come back to the picket line and support my brothers and sisters. Is it possible for me to come back to open arms? If so I would love to be shop steward again. I have scene both sides of the fence during a strike. I am more than willing to come back to the picket line if my brother's will accept me.

...Nah I was just kidding me and my brother would much rather see all you dirt bags sit out in the sun and rot. I've used the union for all it could give me, now its time to cut it out completely.

Being an IAM member is a lot like being in a mental institution the inmates think they are running the institution.
But in all reality they do what they are instructed too do nothing more.
When they talk too each other they are convinced they are running the institution.

I do know this, USA is boiling lots of hot water. They will toss in the ham bones for your bonus and you will accept it. If your members voted NOW they'd accept the last offer made. Guess what you'll see? Maybe mixed around a little.
You better hope your negotiating morons let you see it. They are itching to go for a record strike. They, after all, are still being paid right? You knew that then?
And any increase that MAY be made to the union will come at the lower seniority's expense. You knew that right? Always does.

They will accept anything they can get now. It must suck to be over 40 year's old and have to borrow money from your parents, because you're out on strike for an unworthy cause.

    I heard from good sources:
No back pay. The company will never, ever, give you backpay! You walked off the job for 3 months, and you are that ignorant to think they are going to reward you with back pay for having a 3 month vacation. Get real.
Now you are getting tired and angry and will HAVE to accept whatever they offer. And this will not be as good of a contract as the first.
    Sorry.
